State Competition 2014

posted Feb 24, 2014, 12:31 PM by Nathan Johnson

In order to participate at state, students must attend the April 4 meeting. If you are at school that day, you must be at the meeting. No exceptions.

The Science Olympiad regional competition will be April 4-5 at UW-Stout

In reading the schedule on the reverse side, Oregon’s team number is #2.

The cost for the bus and hotel is $60. Payments will be due by the March 18 meeting. Checks can be made out to OHS Science Olympiad. If this cost is a financial hardship, please let me know and we’ll make arrangements for the cost to be waived. If there are issues with participating on Friday, please contact Mr. Johnson ASAP.

The rough draft of the schedule (still subject to change):

Friday

  • Drop off luggage before school at the PAC (and all equipment for the competition)

  • Luggage will be searched during 1st hour while students are in class

  • Students come to the PAC after 1st hour and we load the bus.

  • We travel to UW-Stout. We will be on campus for various activities throughout the afternoon

  • We’ll go somewhere for dinner

  • Do an evening activity

  • Curfew & room check will be at 11:00 pm.

Saturday
  • Free continental breakfast available at hotel

  • Bus for early events will depart the hotel at 7:15

  • Bus for everyone else will depart the hotel at 7:50

  • Awards should hopefully wrap up around 5:30 (though they often go long)

  • Optimistically, we should return to OHS at 9pm on Saturday. (may be as late as 10)

Mr. Johnson will be reachable throughout the trip at 608-492-1770.

If you have any questions about the draft plan for the state competition, please let me know.

Thanks for supporting your students in their scientific endeavors!

Starting Up for 2012-2013 School Year

If you missed the initial meeting on October 16, here is some information you need to know:

Expectations:
  • We will meet approximately every 2 weeks (see calendar) at 7:30 am in room 691
  • At every meeting, you will share what progress you have made on your primary category
  • If you miss a meeting, you must email Mr. Johnson a quick summary of your progress since the previous meeting
  • Attendance, effort, and progress in your primary category will all be used to determine who makes the competition roster (everyone gets to compete, but only 20 categories count toward our official team score) and who gets first selection of secondary categories

See the calendar link on the left for our full calendar for the year

Things you need to do:

  1. Complete a member information sheet and return it to Mr. Johnson (see attachment below)
  2. Read the event information sheet and consider what events you want to rank as your preferences for your primary event (and consider if you have a preference as to who your partner is for your primary event) (see attachment below)

At the next meeting (October 30), you will submit your preferences for your primary event for the year.
